According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), about 1 in 5 (19%) children in the U.S. has obesity and certain groups of children are more affected than others. In addition:
- Children with obesity are at a higher risk for having other chronic health conditions and diseases, such as asthma, sleep apnea, bone and joint problems, and type 2 diabetes.
- Children with obesity can be bullied and teased more than their normal weight peers. They are also more likely to suffer from social isolation, depression, and lower self-esteem.
- Children with obesity are more likely to have obesity as adults. This can lead to lifelong physical and mental health problems. Adult obesity is associated with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and many types of cancers.
In 2016, the AdvoCare Foundation recognized that childhood obesity is a major public health problem and pledged to make a sustainable difference by investing in organizations that help create healthy family habits, and attack the issue with the Foundation’s three main pillars: daily physical activities, nutritional education, and access to adequate food. The Foundation has donated more than $1M to nonprofit grantees in nine states. These grantee partners are committed to fighting childhood obesity and making lasting impacts in their communities and have already made a lasting impact on hundreds of lives.
Be sure to shop AdvoCare.com between September 22-25, 2020 to help support the fight against childhood obesity.
